Hazing is defined as an activity in which an individual intentionally or recklessly endangers the physical health of another person for the purpose of initiation into or affiliation with a student organization, athletic team, or academic association at a high school or university in the United States. This criminal act can be inflicted by both student members of the club and by adult coaches or mentors.
The criminal punishment for hazing in Las Vegas depends on whether the victim got seriously harmed. If hazing did not result in substantial bodily harm, it is a misdemeanor offense that is punishable by a maximum jail sentence of six months and fines of up to $1,000. Alternatively, if hazing causes substantial bodily harm, it is a gross misdemeanor which results in a maximum jail sentence of 364 days and fines of up to $2,000.
Lastly, if hazing causes death, Nevada may bring charges of involuntary manslaughter or second-degree murder. These homicide charges are associated with felony penalties of extensive prison sentences.
